About the Artist

A northwestern Wisconsin native, Paul exhibits his work professionally throughout the Midwest. Growing up in rural Amery, Paul was inspired to draw and paint the area landscapes.

As an elementary student in 1979, Paul was honored to be the Wisconsin youth selected to present an original watercolor painting to the governor for Youth Art Month. Since then he has been a guest artist at local Ducks Unlimited banquets and the Minnesota Waterfowl Association’s 1993 Annual Banquet. In 1996 he was featured as a sketch artist for North American HUNTER magazine. He earned 3rd place in the Minnesota Loon Art State Competition in 1997. He painted Campfire Remembrances which was printed in limited edition (1998) to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lake Wapogasset Lutheran Bible Camp near Amery. In 2000, Paul was honored as a Wisconsin Watercolor Society Signature Member. He went on to earn 1st place in the Iowa Artist State Show in 2002 with his original work, Voices of Loon Lake. Additional originals have been printed in limited edition entitled Whispers of the North, Hidden Valley and Our Hope and Strength. In 2006, the original entitled Walking in the Light was published in conjunction with the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Northwest Synod of Wisconsin in support and honor of the people of Malawi, Africa. Paul is also a member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society, receiving Awards of Merit at the 2007 Fall and 2008 Spring Exhibitions for his originals, Evening Aura and Sun and Rain.

Paul brings his love of painting and teaching together as he guides others through watercolor workshops. Largely a self-taught watercolorist, Paul has been highly influenced through the study of and/or with artists Russell Norberg, Robert Wade, Alvaro Castagnet, Cheng-Khee Chee and John Salminen. Paul paints to recreate a feeling of a place and time of day, so that viewers may enter into a similar experience through his work.
